Chess Openings for Advanced Players

Chess openings are considered by some to be the most important part of the game. A good opening can give the player the opportunity to jump ahead of their opponent and take control of the board. And even novice chess players know that if you can get control of the board, you’re more likely to dominate the rest of the game; this includes taking the win. Chess openings for advanced players are no more important than openings for beginners. The difference most likely between beginner’s and advanced players lies with the strategies that are used to gain the opening advantage.

There are a multitude of opening strategies that chess players can use; some that work well and others that do not. Opening strategies depend largely on both the person using it and the opponent’s knowledge of the tactic. But both know that in order to win the game your opening strategy needs to be well thought so it catches your opponent off guard. Advanced players all over the world are constantly changing their opening strategies to stay ahead of their competition. With dozens of opening strategies and confusion at hand it is important to remember that all opening strategies (regardless of their different names) need to do four important things:

1. Develop the chess pieces quick and effectively

2. Control the center of the board

3. Protect the king

4. Keep your pawns structured.

Developing your pieces

While this may not be an exact strategy it is no less important to remember. Developing your pieces quick and effectively is a clear objective for beginner and advanced players. An advanced player will have thought things through carefully and know where to place their pieces so they can get the best use. The two most important pieces to give thought to are the bishops and knights. Especially for advanced players when it becomes harder to read your opponent because of experience it is important to develop your pieces to reasonable positions. Try to get your pawns to the center of the board quickly as to restrain your opponent’s movement options. Don’t underestimate how important your development of pieces can be to a winning game.

Controlling the center board

Control of the center four squares and then eventually the extending center squares means that you control the most active part of the board. From the center of the board you have the most space to control the rest of the chessboard. So whichever strategy you decide to implore, make sure you take advantage of the board and get your pieces into the center as quickly as possible.

Protecting your king and pawn structure

The two can often go hand in hand as the pawns provide a safe have for the king. If you don’t structure your pawns carefully around the king you risk placing him under attack and thus losing the game.

The Sicilian Defense is one among many very popular defensive and offensive strategies that advanced and intermediate players can use. It happens as you move the pawn which sits in front of the queen’s bishop forward. This move allows for a swift exit of the queen which gives you a better chance of winning. It can be used on both the defense and the offense and chess players love using it.

Remember that chess openings for advanced players can sometimes be confusing, but stick to the main objectives of every opening by developing pieces, controlling the center board, protecting the king and structuring your pawns and any advanced player can have a shot at winning their game.
