When you are playing chess there may come a time when you think strategy won’t work. But to know how to play chess by the rules, and use strategy will win you more chess games then chance or anything else.
The rules to chess are basically how each of the six different pieces can move. These moves will determine what pieces can take or attack another piece. When you are in check you must move and when in checkmate you have lost. There can, however, be a draw and this is the end of the game.
How to play chess by the rules, and use strategy is taking the pieces and the moves that they can make and forming a plan to execute throughout the game. You will start with a strategy and then plan how you will accomplish your goals. You do not need to do anything but use strategy and keep an eye on what your opponent is doing.
Begin with the pawn. Pawns are typically the first to get moved and your strategy should start here with the rules that are a part of chess. Pawns can move one space forward unless it is the first move the pawn makes in the game, then the pawn can move two spaces. A pawn can capture on a forward diagonal space. If a pawn happens to get to the other side of the board it can be used as a piece of the player choice, usually a queen, but never a king.
To use strategy to play chess by the rules you can set up your pawn structure so that the pawns help protect the king. You will not want to have a pawn off by itself so that it is vulnerable. Pawns together are stronger, unless one pawn is directly in front of another pawn.
You can use your knights and bishops to get out on board center early in the game and get set up to control board center. How to play chess by the rules, and use strategy using these two pieces will enable you to use what’s called pins or forks. You can use your knights and bishops to have a duel attack option. You opponent will then have to choose which piece to save and which to sacrifice.
Knights move up two and over one or up one and over two, or the same thing only back then over. The knight can jump which adds to its value as a chess piece. Bishops move on a diagonal any number of squares you want it to. Bishops can also go over other pieces. These two pieces make good attackers and defenders. You can strategically see where your knights and bishops will be most advantageous by evaluating the chessboard after each move.
The rook is moved any number of squares either vertically or horizontally. You can use the rook in any strategy when playing chess. The rook is also used when castling. Castling involves the king and the rook and is done in most chess games. The king is allowed to move two squares towards the rook and then the rook is moved on the other side of the king. This can be done only when certain conditions are met in the game, like either the king or the rook have not been moved yet in the game.
Your king must be protected during the chess game, and this can most assuredly be done with the right strategy. Just remember your king can only move one square at a time. Don’t get your king trapped.
The queen can be a great asset to the strategy of your chess game. The queen can move up, down, over and diagonal as many squares as you’d like her to. Use your queen in wise moves that get you the advantage or at least keep the board equal.
