Chess Opening Essentials

Most experienced chess players know and understand that the chess opening can determine the fate of either player in any game. A bad opening game can seal the win for their opponent and a good opening can increase your chances of winning greatly. Professional chess players are continually changing their opening moves and strategies just to stay fresh and to keep an edge on their opponents. If you are a novice to the game of chess you will quickly learn that there are some very apparent chess opening essentials that you will need in order to increase your chances at beating your opponent.

Start out your game with a game plan. No one has every won anything without a game plan at least in the back of their mind. The objective in the opening of a chess game is to reach a good position. You want your pieces to be in places where they will be utilized to their maximum capacity and yet still remain an asset to your game and protectors of the king. Initial moves have been sketched out for hundreds of years. It does not matter how well you play the middle or endgame, if you opening is weak because you haven’t thought your game plan through, or worst yet you don’t have one, then you are doomed to failure right from the start.

After you have thought out what strategies you want to use you will need to begin developing your pieces and take control of the center board. Don’t just stay focused on the pawns; every piece will need to be moved to an effective square as quickly as possible in order to gain the advantage against your opponent. The most effective squares for your pieces to be on are the ones that are the middle four squares on the board. These squares are considered to be the center board and by getting your best pieces there quickly you can control the rest of the game. Get your knights and bishops out first, and then castle to protect the king. Developing your pieces and taking control of the center board are two chess opening essentials if you want to be a dominating force throughout the game.

Another essential component to a good chess opening is pawn structure and safeguarding your king. Don’t be fooled into thinking that your pawns are useless pieces and should be used for sacrifice only. Just because they are valued with the lowest point value on the board, doesn’t mean they don’t play a vital role in the game strategy. The pawn is the foot soldier of chess and unlike other pieces on the board it can move in only one direction; forward. As you consider carefully where to put them you allow other pieces to move where they need to go. They can open up diagonals for bishops, and offer protection for other important pieces. Make sure that you structure your pawns in a way that they will help your game, not hinder it. Try to avoid doubling your pawns by keeping them strategically placed on the board and use them to safeguard your king. One great thing about pawns is if you keep them alive long enough to make it to the other side of the board they are promoted to a new piece. Most players choose to promote their pawn to a queen which then can come in very handy in terms of a winning strategy.

If you are new to the game you will do well to remember that there are some chess opening essentials and strategies that can help you get ahead of your opponent. Using them can make a big difference in whether you win or lose the game; so plan your opening carefully.
